Writing Websites for Teachers
There are many wonderful websites to support teachers in their quest to teach writing. We have gathered the best resources and created a set of links for your convenience. Ginny Hoover maintains an awesome website for everything you need to know about the 6 Traits of Writing. This is a nice 6 Traits website that is maintained by the Madison Metropolitan School District. You will find rubrics, writing strategies, and more. Grace Haskins has put together a well thought out spelling and phonics program for primary grades. Take a look - it's well worth it. Download these posters on your color printer, laminate them, and hang them in your room. The free posters offered here are wonderful and better than any you will find in a teacher's supply store. Check out this 6 Traits of Writing Interactive Site. If you are looking for resources to support writing across the curriculum this is the site to visit. Northwest Regional Educational Laboratories is the place to go to learn about everything 6 Traits. This is where it all began.
This site puts authors in the classroom. It's a program that collaborates between authors and teachers. This is where the heartbeat of school writing programs began back with Lucy Calkins and Donald Graves. It's worth a look! Ralph does it all - books for children, books for grown-ups, books for writing teachers, and now he has a writing curriculum. Check out Ralph's website for great writing resources. Get your daily writing fix here. This is a neat little site with lots of resources. If you are trying to get a grip on expository writing then check out this site. The definitions and examples here will help you understand the different expository text structures. The ladies who wrote the book have put together some nice resources for you. Both of their books are for primary classrooms and offer a fresh approach to teaching writing. If you haven't heard of the National Writing Project you've been missing out. We highly recommend that you attend a summer session in your area. It is one of the best professional development experiences on earth! Check out this website. It was designed to get kids writing! An awesome site for readers, writers and teachers of children's literature. It's a one stop kid's lit shop. Are you a closet writer? Do you dream of publishing a children's book some day? The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is the group to join in order to learn everything you need to know. In addition, this site lists member websites. If you are looking for local authors - this is a fantastic resource. This website allows you to select different items and then generates a story starter for writing. Harper Collins Children's Books operates this site. It's a walk through showing kids how a book is made. Try out Penguin-Putnam's Mad Libs online. Use this activity to reinforce grammar skills.
This is great resource for secondary teachers of English / Language Arts. This website allows you to create a bibliography in MLA style for free. Great resource for secondary and college research papers.
