Readability Level: Middle of year 2nd grade

Review: By the Light of the Moon is filled with simple, yet compelling language, and beautiful pictures. Touch the textured moon on the cover. This story has a circular text structure, and three events before the problem is solved. The characters are mice. The illustrations portray the mice as sweet and loving. Other animal characters in the story include a mole, owl, and duck. Read aloud time: five minutes.

Teaching Possibilities: The language and dialogue in this story opens up plenty of opportunities for study in writing workshop. Vocabulary words to explore: nook, plow, willow tree, reeds, riverbank, and shelter. This book is filled with wonderful verbs, especially -ed verbs. It's a simple story for younger children to dramatize or retell the sequence of events.
