Harper, Jo. Finding Daddy: A Story of the Great Depression. Turtle Books, 2005. ISBN-10:1890515310 Summary: Bonnie's life changed when Daddy was suddenly out of work. When he left, Bonnie found her Daddy, and found a way for her family to make money to survive. Readability Level: 3rd grade Review: Finding Daddy is a powerful story about a little girl growing up during the depression. Bonnie searches for her Daddy when he doesn't come home. She is determined to find him, and is willing to do the one thing which frightens her the most to get him to come home - sing. The story is beautifully told in strong, flowing language. Teaching Possibilities: Finding Daddy not only gives you the opportunity to teach about the Depression, but helps children truly glimpse into the life of another child during another time period. They will relate to the character in many ways, therefore making text to self connections. They will naturally have questions and predictions throughout the story. This story is an excellent choice for integrating reading and social studies. Visit the Author's Website: Jo Harper
