Reading Teacher's Toolbox Welcome to our Reading Teacher's Toolbox. We are opening up our files and adding tools to help you teach reading effectively.
Books Scouts Reading Incentive Program We've put together a simple program for encouraging students to read. Our Book Scouts program rewards students with merit badges and certificates for different levels of honor. This program is great for individual classrooms, grade levels, or as a school wide program. Treat it similar to Boy Scouts by giving students their rewards in a special honor assembly.
Give each student a copy of the booklet. You can copy the pages front to back and bind them together. Students read a book and complete an activity in order to earn their "merit" badge. Once a student reads a required book they get the "merit badge" to place on the appropriate page. A teacher or parent signs each required reading entry. Decide how many books students must complete in order to rise to the next Book Scout level. Ranks include Rookie Reader, Junior Reader, Senior Reader, Junior Librarian, Senior Librarian, and Star Book Scout.
As students complete a book and activity they earn a "merit badge." We suggest running the badges on sticker printer paper and asking a parent to cut them out and place them in envelopes.
We've dug into our file cabinets in order to share quizzes we've made up for different picture books and novels.
What is balanced reading? What is phonemic awareness? This is a page of common definitions for reading terms for terms.
One of the most asked questions by teachers, "What are some good books to read aloud to my class?" This is a comprehensive list of popular titles by grade level (K-5). You can also use this list to help set up your classroom library. We recommend you maintain 50% of your books on grade level, 25% of your books one and two years above grade level, and 25% of your books one and two years below grade level for your classroom reading center. The books are selected for excellent writing and illustrations and shelf life.
